PHILADELPHIA (November 29, 2012) – Mt. Airy USA and the Free Library of Philadelphia will host a public meeting on Saturday, December 8th from 12-1 pm at the Lovett Library Meeting Room (6945 Germantown Ave- enter on Sedgwick St). Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the project’s background and current plans to create a vibrant public park and central community gathering place. The Park’s proposed features include: a welcoming courtyard library entrance called The Porch; an outdoor reading garden; a story ring; an active plaza along Germantown Avenue; a sculptural nature play area for young children and an amphitheater for outdoor performances. To encourage young families to attend, the library has designed special kid’s activities to entertain children while parents peacefully attend the meeting. Librarians will be offering an old-fashioned story time with storytelling, picture books, and poetry. Lunch will also be provided.
Mt. Airy USA worked with the Community Design Collaborative (a volunteer-based community design center that provides pro-bono preliminary design services to nonprofits) to develop a conceptual plan for Lovett Park, completed last spring. The organization recently hired Lager Raabe Skafte & Bush Landscape Architects (LRSLA) to complete the next phase of the project, design development. The firm will provide an explanation of their role in taking the conceptual design through the next phase. They will explain, through illustrative drawings and photographic images, the development of the site, focusing on the Park’s special featured spaces.
LRSLA is developing ‘working’ drawings, adapting the concept to the actual conditions and physical constraints of the site. These drawings form a package of documents from which they can develop cost estimates and an implementation program. As the firm examines each of the Park’s spaces, they will speak to its function in the overall plan, and show images of the various materials and finishes, including paving, site furnishings, lighting, planting and feature elements. The community’s feedback will have a direct influence on some of the ultimate design decisions. Mt. Airy, USA is a non-profit organization located at 6703 Germantown Avenue that is spurring the revitalization of Mt. Airy’s business and residential communities. The organization’s mission is to preserve, empower and advance a vibrant and diverse Mt. Airy by stimulating development responsive to the community. In line with its mission, Mt. Airy, USA seeks to improve the quality of life for Mt. Airy through three program areas: Real Estate Development, Commercial Corridor Revitalization, and Neighborhood Programs.
